United States Census Bureau American Community Survey for 2015—2019, 5-Year Narrative Profile for zip code 10016

Households and Families. In 2015-2019, there were 29,200 households in ZCTA5 10016. The average household size was 1.75 people. Married-couple households made up 24.3 percent of the households in ZCTA5 10016 while cohabiting couple households made up 6.0 percent of households. Female householder families with no spouse or partner present and own children under 18 years were 0.6 percent of all households, while 0.1 percent of households were male householder families with no spouse or partner present and own children under 18 years. Of people living alone, 27.2 percent were male householders, and 27.3 percent were female householders, for a total of 54.5 percent of all households. In ZCTA5 10016, 8.3 percent of all households have one or more people under the age of 18; 20.0 percent of all households have one or more people 65 years and over.

Nativity and Foreign Born. In 2015-2019, an estimated 74.0 percent were U.S. natives. 40.1 percent were living in the state where they were born. Approximately 26.0 percent were foreign-born. 50.3 percent of foreign born were naturalized U.S. citizens and an estimated 67.1 percent entered the country before the year 2010. [Foreign-born residents came primarily from Asia (54%), Europe (28%) and Latin America (12%).]

Geographic Mobility. In 2015-2019, 81.2 percent of the people at least one year old living in ZC 10016 were living in the same residence one year earlier.

Education. In 2015-2019, 96.6 percent of people 25 years and over had at least graduated from high school and 82.5 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher. An estimated 3.4 percent did not complete high school. The total school enrollment in ZC 10016 was 6,719 in 2015-2019. Nursery school enrollment was 411 and kindergarten through 12th grade enrollment was 2,348. College or graduate school enrollment was 3,960.

Disability. Among the civilian noninstitutionalized population, 6.8 percent reported a disability. The likelihood of having a disability varied by age - from 1.6 percent of people under 18 years old, to 3.6 percent of people 18 to 64 years old, and to 28.9 percent of those 65 and over.

Employment Status and Type of Employer. 74.6 percent of the population 16 and over were employed; 23.1 percent were not currently in the labor force. An estimated 88.6 percent of the people employed were private wage and salary workers; 5.7 percent were federal, state, or local government workers; and 5.7 percent were self-employed in their own (not incorporated) business.

Industries. The civilian employed population 16 years and older in ZCTA5 10016 worked in the following industries (top 6): Professional / Scientific (27%), Finance / Insurance / Real Estate / Rental  (25%), Educational services / health care / social assistance (17%), Information (7%), Arts / entertainment / recreation / accommodation / food services (6%), Retail (4%).

Commuting to Work (Mode). Walked (44%), Public Transportation (excl. taxis) (40%), other (6%), Worked at home (5%).

Income. The median income of households in ZC 10016 was $126,628. An estimated 4.8 percent of households had income below $10,000 a year, 16% had income below $35,000 per year,  and 32.0 percent had income over $200,000 or more.

Poverty and Participation in Government Programs. 8.2 percent of people were in poverty. An estimated 3.6 percent of children under 18 were below the poverty level, compared with 7.0 percent of people 65 years old and over. An estimated 8.9 percent of people 18 to 64 years were below the poverty level.

Health Insurance. Among the civilian noninstitutionalized population in ZCTA5 10016 in 2015-2019, 96.4 percent had health insurance coverage

Population. ZC 10016 had a total population of 52,886 – 27,531 (52.1 percent) females and 25,355 (47.9 percent) males. The median age was 32.7 years. An estimated 7.4 percent of the population was under 18 years, 60.4 percent was 18 to 44 years, 18.6 percent was 45 to 64 years, and 13.6 percent was 65 years and older.

Race and Hispanic origin. For people reporting one race alone, 71.9 percent were White; 3.8 percent were Black or African American; 0.2 percent were American Indian and Alaska Native; 20.3 percent were Asian; and 1.2 percent were some other race. An estimated 2.5 percent reported two or more races. An estimated 8.2 percent were Hispanic. An estimated 65.3 percent were White non-Hispanic. People of Hispanic origin may be of any race.

Housing Inventory Characteristics. In 2015-2019, ZCTA5 10016 had a total of 35,200 housing units. Of these housing units, 1.2 percent were single-family houses either not attached to any other structure or attached to one or more structures (commonly referred to as “townhouses” or “row houses”). 98.7 percent of the housing units were located in multi-unit structures

Occupied Housing Characteristics. ZC 10016 had 29,200 housing units that were occupied or had people living in them, while the remaining 6,000 were vacant. Of the occupied housing units, the percentage of these houses occupied by owners (also known as the homeownership rate) was 29.4 percent while renters occupied 70.6 percent. The average household size of owner-occupied houses was 1.73 and in renter-occupied houses it was 1.76.

Financial Characteristics and Housing Costs. The median property value for owner-occupied houses in ZC 10016 was $839,700. Of the owner-occupied households, 55.3 percent had a mortgage. 44.7 percent owned their houses “free and clear,” that is without a mortgage or loan on the house. The median monthly housing costs for owners with a mortgage was $3,153 and for owners without a mortgage it was $1,448. For renter-occupied houses, the median gross rent was $2,630. Gross rent includes the monthly contract rent and any monthly payments made for electricity, gas, water and sewer, and any other fuels to heat the house. Households that pay thirty percent or more of their income on housing costs are considered cost-burdened. Cost-burdened households in ZC 10016 accounted for 30.3 percent of owners with a mortgage, 16.7 percent of owners without a mortgage, and 44.8 percent of renters.

Computer and Internet Use. In 2015-2019, 95.0 percent of households in ZCTA5 10016 had a computer, and 91.6 percent had a broadband internet subscription. An estimated 90.2 percent of households had a desktop or laptop, 88.9 percent had a smartphone, 71.3 percent had a tablet or other portable wireless computer, and 2.5 percent had some other computer. Among all households, 74.6 percent had a cellular data plan; 85.9 percent had a broadband subscription such as cable, fiber optic, or DSL; 2.2 percent had a satellite internet subscription; 0.3 percent had dial-up alone; and 0.0 percent had some other service alone.
