The Lost Treasures of Murray Hill Came to Life in a Talk by Tom Miller

Tom Miller’s talk, "Lost Treasures of Murray Hill,” presented on April 2nd was a rousing success. A sell-out crowd at the Center for Applied Judaism on 39th Street heard Tom tell tales of Old New York and our neighborhood’s most prominent buildings. Tom's lecture highlighted exceptional buildings like the 34th Street Armory, the Murray Hill Hotel and the Havemeyer Mansion, buildings which once graced our area, but were lost to the wrecking ball. The lecture was very timely, as the Preservation & Design Committee continues to do its work to extend landmark protection to more of the historic buildings in Murray Hill. Potential redevelopment would put many historic buildings at risk, thus highlighting the importance of the work of the P&D Committee.

Tom is an author whose architectural blog, A Daytonian in Manhattan, details the history of exceptional buildings throughout Manhattan. He writes one blog per day on one building, every day except Sunday. You will find over 70 entries for buildings in Murray Hill on his blog. His book, Seeking New York: The Stories Behind the Historic Architecture of Manhattan? One Building at a Time, is available on Amazon.

This event was organized by The Murray Hill Neighborhood Association’s P&D Committee. The ticket revenue from the event will help pay for research and filing costs of applying for landmark protection for Murray Hill buildings. We want to give special thanks to Trader Joe’s who provided us with a wonderful array of cheeses and crackers for the reception after the lecture as well as the Center for Applied Judaism who provided the space in their lovely historic townhouse. We look forward to more events like this in the future.
