The Park Avenue Malls Bring Holiday Cheer to the Neighborhood!

The Murray Hill Neighborhood Association kicked off the holiday season on December 4 with the tree lighting on the Park Avenue Malls. The Park Avenue Memorial Holiday Trees (34th to 96th Street) have been a holiday staple for over 70 years. The ritual began in 1945 as a memorial for lives lost in our nation's wars. It continues today as a reminder and symbol of sacrifices made so that all can enjoy the freedom of speech and religion guaranteed by our Constitution. The Murray Hill Holiday Lighting is one of scores of seasonal rituals around the city.

As is customary, Santa Claus made a surprise visit to the event and thrilled the children by handing out candy canes, listening to their Christmas requests, and posing with them for pictures.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer stopped by for a brief chat.

After the mall lighting, the adults in the group adjourned to the bar at The Kitano Hotel for a spontaneous and jolly time of fellowship and camaraderie. It was wonderful to see new faces at the gathering.
